Billy Joe "Hammer" Smith, age 84, of Atlanta, Texas, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2024 at his home. Billy was born November 27, 1939, in Daingerfield, Texas, to Olen Lee Smith and Ola Mae Johnson Smith.

Billy was a Baptist.  He graduated Paul Pewitt High School in 1959 and then entered the United States Navy.  Upon returning home, he went to work at Lone Star Steel where he worked until retirement.  Billy enjoyed fishing and hunting.  He also enjoyed watching the Texas Longhorns, the Texas Rangers, and the Dallas Cowboys.  Billy loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Billy was preceded in death by his parents; and two wives, Jo Ann Munkres Smith and Sissy Scaff Smith.

Survivors include two sons, Jackie Lee Smith of Cookville, Texas and Barry Alan Smith and wife Karen of Liberty Eylau, Texas; two daughters, Jo Lynne Hembree of Atlanta and Tina Willoughby of Caddo Lake, Texas; seven grandchildren, Chaney Weems and husband Brad, Jace Lane Smith, Joe Ann Combs and husband Nick, Justin Cobb and wife Jordan, Lindy Griffin, Loree Ballard and husband Keith, and Kristy Vaughan and husband Darrel; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Cremation services are under the direction of Harrison Funeral Home, Naples, Texas.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2024 at Omaha Cemetery with Larry Griffin officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chambers Hospice.
