Harold Lloyd Smith was born May 18, 1924 in Ft. Worth, Texas, on his mother's birthday. His parents were Roy Lenard and Lillian Guess Smith. He had one sister, Ruth Smith Clopton who was 3 years older. He grew up in the Ft. Worth area and always loved raising farm animals. He was given his first horse on his 12 ^th birthday and had horses all of his life. He tried his hand at rodeoing as a young man, riding bare back broncs. His career ended when he broke his collarbone and his young bride decided that was enough. He was quite industrious, even as a kid with a milk and egg route along with mowing grass.

He was raised in the Advent Christian Church and helped build the Riverside Advent Christian Church in Ft. Worth after returning from WWII. He and his family attended that church until moving to East Texas where they attended Rocky Branch Missionary Baptist Church.

He was drafted at the age of 18 to fight in WWII in the South Pacific. He served in the army in the 86 ^th Infantry as a BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) man. He went on 13 amphibious landings. After returning from the war he met the love of his life, Calestine Rogers and after a 3 month courtship they were married April 8, 1946. He worked for the Gulf Oil Refinery. They had 3 children; Larry, Glenda and Brenda. He worked at Menasco Manufacturing Company, farming on the side till he took an early retirement in 1983 to move to East Texas where they resided until his death. They moved to this area with the intention of fishing more but because they were somewhat "workaholics," they didn't fish as much as they thought they would.

The facts of his life in no way describe the man. Besides being a hardworking man people say he was a "good" man. He was good natured and easy going. He was also very thrifty, some saying he had the first nickel he ever made. He loved his wife, Calestine and they were married for 70 years. They worked side by side whether they were cutting down trees or making dinner.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, wife, and son. Left behind are his daughters, Glenda (Brent) Carpenter of Mint Hill, North Carolina, Brenda (Robert) Avara of Naples, daughter-in-law, Fairis Smith of Garland, Texas, grandchildren, Scott, Chad, Brian Carpenter, Tonya Leguizamo, Nathan Smith, Jerri Carlile, Misty Van Hooser, Jeremy Avara, Robert Avara, Susie Rainey and Rick Avara, 19 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Barbara Kirkland, brother-in-law, James Rogers and numerous friends and family.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 20, 2017 at Rocky Branch Missionary Baptist Church in Rocky Branch with Rev. Brent Carpenter and Rev. Ricky Knight officiating. Interment will follow at Springhill Cemetery in Rocky Branch. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church, prior to the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rocky Branch Missionary Baptist Church.
