Maxine Frost Sloan, age 99, of Oxnard, California, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2018, in Ventura, California. Maxine was born October 3, 1918 in Bryans Mill, Texas, the first child of Austin Cleveland Frost and Verna Camellia Hargett Frost.
Maxine graduated from Naples High School, and also Northeast Texas State College. She obtained a master's degree at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. Maxine started teaching school in Atlanta, Texas, at the age of 17. She married Merl William Sloan on June 19, 1942. She went on to teach for 35 years, quitting at the age of 50. She taught School in California, Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. Maxine was a favorite teacher to many students for generations. She was smart, sweet and had a wonderful sense of humor. She had a loving spirit and will be greatly missed. After stopping teaching, Maxine traveled 23 countries in Europe and Russia. She loved dancing and music, both Big Band and Country. Maxine lived in Ventura County, California for 56 years. She lived near the ocean and attended dances three to four times a week.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Merl William Sloan, in 1970; her parents, Austin and Verna Frost; one son, Darryl Merl Sloan; one sister, Mavis Jo Alice Frost McMahon; and one brother, James Austin Frost.
Survivors include one daughter, Verna Gail Sloan; one granddaughter, Kelly Marie Dugaiczyk; two great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life service will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2018 at the fellowship hall of Union Chapel Methodist Church in Douglassville.
