Dr. Nelida Ojeda Cuenca, age 94, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, passed away Friday, October 28, 2022 in Mt. Pleasant, Texas.  Nelly was born June 21, 1928, in San Jose De Feliciano, Entre Rios, Argentina, to Encarnacion Ojeda and Ana Corona de Ojeda.

Nelly was a Board Certified Pediatrician and had a passion for adolescent medicine.  She was the first female physician in Cleveland County, North Carolina.  She was an alumnus of the UNC School of Public Health, member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, member of the American Medical Association; and former director of the Public Health Department in Orange County, North Carolina.  She enjoyed staying in touch with all the nurses she worked with.  When not working, Nelly enjoyed painting, knitting, gardening, sewing, birdwatching, cooking, traveling, antiquing, and dancing.  She loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Nelly was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jorge Ojeda and Encarnacion Ojeda, Jr.; and two sisters, Ana E. Fregenal and Aida Maria Rosas.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Ana and Dr. Douglas McCrory of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Dr. Rosa Cuenca and Dr. Gordon Downie of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; four grandchildren, Nicholas McCrory, Lucas McCrory, Gordon Downie, Jr., and Nelida Downie; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Harrison Funeral Home, Naples, Texas.

The family would like to thank all the staff at The Lodge Memory Care and Heart to Heart Hospice and the Drs. Singa for her care.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Heart to Heart Hospice.
