Vivian Cleave (V. C.) Motley passed away peacefully at home on July 15, 2016. He lived a rich, full life with loving family and many friends.
V.C. was born September 3, 1917 on the family farm in Omaha, Texas the youngest son to Randolph and Christoria (Duncan) Motley. He received his education in Omaha, graduating from Omaha High School in 1935. V. C. served in the US Army, Company M, 310th Infantry during World War II earning the following citations: American Defense Services Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, two Bronze Stars and The Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in 1945. V.C. married Bonnie Williams on May 30, 1948. Using the GI Bill in 1947, V. C. started Motley's Roofing and Sheet Metal Shop in Longview, Texas. His son, Randall, took over the business in 1985. In his retirement V.C. built a log home on the family homestead in Omaha, Texas and had a large garden and raised cattle. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, playing cards and dominoes and watching sports.
V.C. and Bonnie attended many World War II reunions at various locations over the years reconnecting with other veterans and their families. They also were privileged to take a tour to Israel to visit the Holy Land. V.C. enjoyed deep sea fishing in the Gulf, hunting Dall sheep in Alaska and his annual hunts at squirrel camp in Morris County.
V.C. humbly served as a deacon at Temple Baptist Church in Longview and Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Omaha. V.C. lost his hearing later in life but that didn't stop him from telling good stories. He loved a funny joke and making people laugh.
He is survived by his bride of 68 years, Bonnie Ruth (Williams) their five children (and their spouses); Vivian (Ryan) Chalmers, Elizabeth Motley (Larry Briand), Becky (Lyle) Watson, Brenda (Scott) Sexton and Randall (Linda) Motley; eight grandchildren Amy Briley, Jeff (Stephanie) Green, Stuart Collins, Lucy (Rusty) Bragg, Jared Sexton, Skyler (Jonathan) Galvan, Joseph Motley, Rachel (Charles) Barker; five great-grandchildren Austin & Sarah Green, Daxton Bragg, Bentley Barker and Lydia Galvan.
V. C. was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings (and their spouses)
Carrie (Emmit) Goins, David (Pansy), Bamana (William) Hawkins, George Fred, Mary Lou (Arthur) Hill, Rosa Lee, (Pearl) Little Randolph, Raymond, Lillian (Elmer) Tohill, Willie and Christine (James Otis) Tohill.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2016, at Harrison Funeral Home in Naples, Texas. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 18, 2016 at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Omaha.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Mt. Moriah Baptist Church would be appreciated by the family.
